Chatham Township Hosts Domestic Violence Conference

The Chatham Township Committee, along with the Jersey Battered Woman Services (JBWS), held a conference to help stop domestic abuse throughout Morris County.

On Tuesday, October 18th, Chatham Township and JBWS spoke about the issue around domestic violence, not only in Morris County, but also throughout the entire state of New Jersey. JBWS spokeswoman Regina Braham along with Mayor Curt Ritter of Chatham Township, organized the event during Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Women and men from neighboring communities met at the Chatham Township Municipal Building to learn, share stories, and help empower families that suffer from abuse.  Braham’s presentation, “Creating a Responsive Community: What You Can Do to Prevent Domestic Violence” aimed to create awareness to the reality of abuse that exists throughout the state. Mayor Ritter was quoted saying, “Each year in New Jersey there are approximately 65,000 reported cases of domestic violence, including more than 2,000 in Morris County alone”. Although the event was a huge success, educating people about their families’ rights around domestic violence disputes continues to be a main concern.

Defining domestic violence can be quite complex, and vary state by state. Under New Jersey law, Domestic Violence is defined as the occurrence of one or more of the following criminal acts against a person protected under the Prevention of Domestic Violence Act of 1990 including: Homicide, Assault, Terroristic Threats, Kidnapping, Criminal Restraint, False Imprisonment, Sexual Assault, Criminal Sexual Conduct, Lewdness, Criminal Mischief, Burglary, Criminal Trespass, Harassment, and Stalking. Furthermore, a person found guilty of violating a domestic violence order (TRO or FRO), can receive a punishment of up to 18 months in a New Jersey State prison.

Domestic violence affects all ages, races, genders, and social classes.
