Before The Month Is Up A Domestic Violence Reminder

Somehow, it has quickly gotten to the end of October. And besides soon having to say goodbye to this year’s trick or treating escapades, the end of this month marks the end of national Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Of course, it is important to pay attention to and stay active against domestic violence every month, every day of the year. A source in the Huffington Post reports that while tragic, abuse is not uncommon. An estimated 25 percent of women will be victims of abuse in their lifetime.

There are various types of abuse and also ways that a family law attorney could help in a domestic violence situation. The most obvious form of domestic violence is physical violence. But there is also emotional, mental and sexual abuse, and sources report that another powerful form of abuse is economic abuse.

Basically, the root of domestic abuse is one partner unhealthily controlling the other through various means of manipulation. These sorts of situations are dangerous for the victimized partner, as well as any children who might be in the middle of the family situation.

A lot of fear goes along with being a domestic violence victim, which leads to the lack of reported cases. But for those out there who find a way to get beyond that fear and seek help, filing for a restraining order can be that initial, brave step.

This kind of situation is not one that should be taken lightly or handled with any mistakes. Depending on an attorney who is experienced in cases involving domestic violence is crucial. If you are in the midst of a divorce process, it is best to let your attorney know whether abuse has existed or does exist within the family.
